Picking out new jogging sneakers

Here’s the deal, folks. Every year on Labor Day in early September, the Main Street Newnan group hosts the Annual Sunrise on the Square Road Race in Historic Downtown Newnan! It consists of a 1 mile Fun Run that begins at 7:45 a.m., followed by a 5k run at 8:00 a.m. They also have a Tot Trot for little kids aged 2-6, but I’m a little too old for that.
Well, I’m determined to compete in the 5K this year. Not participate…COMPETE. That means I’m trying to win. Anyway, I’m starting to train now and I’m getting ready to purchase some new jogging sneakers. I just came across this video that details how to pick out a good pair. Check it out!
Don’t Skimp on Carbs

Does anybody have some good pre-workout eating advice? With summer approaching, I’ve been trying to get it in at the gym a little more, but between work and home responsibilities, I can get worn out. I came across a tip online earlier today that advised to keep eating carbs. It kind of goes against what I’ve been told in the past but it makes sense. Check it out in the 15 Best Workout Tips of all time…
“Your body needs them to fuel a workout, so reach for fruit or high-fiber crackers an hour beforehand. If you’e exercising for 90 minutes or longer, include some protein so that the carbs break down more slowly, giving you longer-lasting energy. Your best bets: low-fat cheese and crackers, trail mix or half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.”

What do you think? I’m no diet expert but it sounds like good advice.

Do you shop for your fresh food and produce locally? If not, you may want to give it some serious consideration. Although today’s global market allows us to buy foods grown almost anywhere in the world at any given time, this option is not the most sustainable.
Buying in-season fruits and vegetables that are locally grown helps to eliminate the environmental damage caused by shipping foods across the country – and in some cases – the world. Not only does your food dollar go directly to the farmers, but you’re able to enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, better tasting, unprocessed produce. According to the National Resources Defense Council, in-season foods for the state of Georgia (and surrouning areas) include:
| Blueberries Cabbage Carrots Greens Snap Beans Strawberries Vidalia Onions Yellow Squash Zucchini Asparagus (Tennessee) Bananas (Florida) Broccoli (Florida, North Carolina) Cantaloupe (Florida) Cauliflower (Florida) Celery (Florida) Chinese Cabbage (Florida) Collards (Tennessee) Cucumber (Florida) Eggplant (Florida) Endive (Florida) Escarole (Florida) Gourds (Tennessee) Grapefruit (Florida) Herbs (Tennessee) Honey (Tennessee) Honeydew Melon (Florida) Indian Corn (Tennessee) Kumquat (Florida) |

Here is a short list of markets that sell fresh locally grown foods near the Preston Mill area. If you can suggest any other markets, leave a comment and let the community know!

Staying healthy over the winter can be difficult with the cold, rain and well cold (hasn’t it been extra cold to you?). One tip to help keep you warm and going this winter though is to simply just take some time for yourself. Pick up a book, write in your journal, meditate or just watch your favorite TV show. Just let your self unwind and give your body a chance to relax. Don’t worry; you can do this the remainder of the seasons too.
